Switzerland wins U20 European Championship!
29.08.2015, Vyskov, CZE – The Swiss U20 National Team won the final of the European Championship against host team Czech Republic with a very strong performance, by a score of 38-0, thereby securing the first European Championship title in Swiss Rugby history. Despite the searing temperatures of the last heatwave of this very hot summer of 2015, the Young Edelweiss delivered a textbook performance as they steadily racked up 5 tries, 5 conversions, and one penalty kick over the course of a well-managed 80 minutes to win the title. The host team, though steadfast in their effort, could not find enough answers, to the questions posed by the visitors.
Right off the start, the Swiss took control of the game, with flanker Joao Quinteiro touching down for the first try after only 8 minutes of play. The impeccable Alexander Caviezel-Cox, who wasn’t to miss a single kick on the day, added the conversion. Play continued much in the same way throughout the first half, with the Swiss playing a disciplined game of occupation of territory, combined with ball-handling into the spaces. The efforts paid off with two more Swiss tries at the 15th and 30th minute.
Despite losing the excellent Jeremie Lukusa to injury, the Swiss backline held together, with substitute Merlin Christ putting in a strong performance off the bench.
